The horse could do a mile in about 1:40 or 1:44 on the plod but on the second mile he became a racehorse and nobody was going to do a distance with him without a brawl. I miss the Display Handicap at two miles and a quarter on New Year's Eve at Aqueduct. From out of nowhere you would see
PEAT MOSS in gear along the backstretch the second time around looking like a young sprinter with tons of run.
Trainer Murray Garren once said, "
PEAT MOSS once worked four fulongs in under two days."
I miss the distance races. And the horses that made 20 or 30 starts in a year.
