Owner James Keene was the same Keene that built a racetrack on his farm and called it Keeneland. FAIR PLAY, who brawled COLIN a few times was the sire of MAN O'WAR. I knew some old fart railrats when I was young who saw COLIN race and they agreed that he was the best ever.

That 10-furlong work tab was faster than any Kentucky Derby ever run.

I can't remember the last time I saw or ever saw a horse work that far while being timed.

Me neither, yet amazingly enough, in today's Brooklyn, Delosvientos, had a 10F work. I think it was in 2:12.
very odd.

The 1941 Triple Crown winner WHIRLAWAY got second in the Derby Trial just a few days before the big race.

On the morning of the Derby (in which he set a record that lasted three deacdes) WHIRLAWAY smoked a 48 flat work tab so that trainer Ben Jones could figure out if he was tired and worn out from the Derby Trial.

Like Ed Arcaro said, "That horse hated people and kicked and bit the people that brought him food and water. But he slept with a cat with one ear, a chicken, and a goat. One time Ben Jones went to his stall and he was flat resting out with the chicken sound asleep on his withers."

No more loony great horses are around.
