I lost two payday Doubles on Derby Day by a nose but there are worse things that can happen.

Some years back when I had regular work at Grumman on Long Island, Vito the Sandwich King was across the highway and Tina Tits was the barmaid. Walter Zirk was 6-foot 8, old and the nastiest bastard that ever lived if he didn't like you. He drove an old Cadillac 4-door because no other auto could fit him. Walter tolerated me since he had attended Hempstead High School in the early 1930s so we were classmates in school together just 33 years apart. There was an OTB in the same strip mall and I roll into Vito's there after work for a beer. There was a screwball two-turn maiden race at Belmont Park on the lawn. Walter buys a 12/13 boxzacta. The #13 is off at 60/1 and the #12 is off at 12/1. Down the lane the #13 is clear by 10 lengths and the #12 is holding the place by several lengths and nobody is coming late.

Inside the sixteenth pole the 60/1 "winner" goes nuts and rolls over the fence for no reason. The 12/1 mope wobbles home. The 13/12 exacta was coming $2,400.00 and Walter rips it. He's out four bucks but that was toughest slam I ever saw in any race at any time. No wire or photo involved - just a tough beat.
