It has been around for many years and has caught a lot of people good money on many occasions. For me it caught a $234.00 P3 today as a single to finish. And a plow at the win window. Not always but you'll grab some fine overlays if you understand "company" and "class" as those terms pertain to horse racing and NY statebreds. I call them "Slow Breds", Yorker calls them "boats".

The rule is easy and goes like this: "Any runner that has shown recent life with open company no matter in what classification of race is alive to run well no matter what classification of statebred race the horse is entered."

Example: The horse went 3rd or 4th in a field of ten open maiden claimers for $40K at Dickdork Downs. Today he or she is in a race for Slow Bred maiden specials. Worthy of action and an overlay.

Example: A horse gets its ass kicked 3rd or 4th with some run in an open claimer but returns to the same claiming price with Slow Breds. Get on it.

Example: A horse is taking some beatings out of town in sharp races with opens but comes home to New York on a drop to meet Slow Breds. Cover.

Fact: A horse that tries and gets beaten narrowly with run with $16K opens and goes into a Slow Bred claimer for $25K is not "going up in company" as Jason & Andy will have you believe. That horse is going up in price but dropping in class.

Time and pace and class and drops and rising figs are wonderful things to handicap but in New York understanding Slow Breds can save your day on a lot of days. The Yorker Rule does not always hold sway but you'll never be broke in a doorway with a pint of cheap wine in a paper bag if you keep it in mind.

The Nutshell: An OK Run In Open Company Makes A Horse "Live" In Slow Bred Company, Class Be Damned.
