It's a nice gesture and I'm enjoying seeing the old duffers who, like me, gave up some youth to serve this great nation in harm's way.

A tip of the cap to NYRA - Well Done!!!

I did four years as a pup in the Marine Corps starting at 17 which I was in this 1965 photo while my beloved drill instructors were kicking the shit out of me each and every day while screaming that I was destined to go home to Mommy in a body bag or in a government-issued pink suit as a Parris Island washout and a failure to American manhood as a "weak sack of wet shit".

I loved being terrified and abused and beaten but those guys made me a Marine doing things physically that I never thought possible. The discipline was inhumane but there was a war going on and the DIs needed to make youngsters into Marines with a shot for survival the best way they could. They were successful.

Pop in '43, his son in '65 and the grandson he never met in '95.
