was the rider on Middleground, the Derby winner for King Ranch. Eddie Arcaro turned the mount down. He went on to win the Belmont after a troubled Preakness. The Derby went in 2:01 and change. Bill and Sandy reside in Florida, he's an avid golfer.

And I bet millions of of people were listening to Clem McCarthy's race call on the radio.
And on this day in 1973 I backed SHAM to win the Derby. He broke the track record that day but so did the bum who beat him, SECRETARIAT.
