SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga thoroughbred rider Norberto Arroyo Jr. took his mounts off of Sunday's card after being arrested earlier that morning.

According to Sgt. Sean Briscoe of the Saratoga Police Department, Arroyo was charged just after 8 a.m. Aug. 16, on Park Place, with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth degree, a class-C felony; and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class-B felony.

Police say that after being stopped for traffic related charges Arroyo was found in possession of approximately 12 grams of cocaine. Police allege Arroyo possessed the cocaine with the intent to sell it.

Arroyo was also charged with not wearing a seat belt, a violation, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, as his privilege to drive in New York State was suspended.

Arroyo has ridden two winners this summer at Saratoga Race Course. He missed three mounts on Sunday; none of the horses he was scheduled to ride finished in the top three with a replacement rider.

Well at least he didn't wage a fight with a pool stick while being arrested.

Just under a half ounce. 700 a half and when broken up he could of made like 1200. Guess his career is over.

I think the coke was all for himself. Tough to keep the weight down, be strong and not eat.
Sad for Arroyo. This is the end to what was a very promising career.

Here's the latest concerning Arroyo's arrest,

......................................................................................................

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Suspended jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr.’s court appearance was postponed until next week, following a request from his attorney.

Arroyo, 33, of Winthrop, Mass., was arrested 8 a.m. Monday, on Park Place, after being stopped for driving with¬out a seat belt. He was found to be in possession of nearly 12 grams of cocaine, and was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class-B felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class-C felony.

One charge pertains to the amount of cocain, the second charge stipulates that drugs were intended for sale.

He was originally sched¬uled to appear in court Tues¬day, but an attorney repre¬senting Arroyo asked the case be adjourned.

Arroyo is now scheduled to appear on August 27. After being arraigned, the case will move to county court for grand jury proceeding.

A fax received by the city court on Tuesday said that Attorney Stephen G. Murphy, whose offices are in Brooklyn, will represent the jockey beginning next.

Arroyo is currently being held in Saratoga County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

The jockey, whose mounts were assigned to different riders for several races at the Saratoga Race Course Sun¬day and Monday, had his rac¬ing license suspended by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board. He previ¬ously had his license sus¬pended for six months in 2008 by the New Jersey Racing Commission for unknown reasons.

The Times Union reported in July that he had to reapply for a New York racing license after failing a Dec. 4, 2008, drug test at Aqueduct. He also spent a night in jail fol¬lowing an assault conviction.

Arroyo’s agent, Tony Cordero, could not be reached for comment.
