Is this the type of race where you are suppose to be smart enough to bet 500 to win?
I can't afford $500 wagers anymore but I remember the last one.
After a great day at Saratoga 1/8 Pole and I go to the trots. I got a royal load on. In the first contest I recognize a shipper from Yonkers who's dropping huge out of post seven. My sister had pieces of trots then, I followed them closely, and I figure this one can beat these bums on three legs with chest pains, even out of post 7.
He's 9/1 with 11 minutes to post. I go buy ten $50 win tickets (no $100 window at Saratoga Harness then). I knock the horse down from 9/1 to 4/5 with one flash of the board. Now everybody goes to the window to plow him. Down to 2/5 with the rush and he gets home by a head at 3/5.
Dumbest thing I ever did as a winner. The small pools needed a slow steady stream of $20 and $30 W/P bets in intervals off the 9/1 odds without risking a half a grand but drunk is often stupid. And I was stupid that night for that race.
I blew up a payday for the barn and I'm just glad they never found out who I was.
