An arctic blast rolled in from the north overnight that knocked the temperature down from near 50 to 20. By sunrise I was home from ShopRite with my warm corn muffin and some other groceries.

I put on the coffee at 7 a.m. and went outside to haul in last night's feed platters and the water bowl. The water bowl was frozen solid. I laid out fresh warm water, kibble and clean platters of great food for the feral cats. And that huge stainless steel feed trough loaded up with almost a pound of Icy Point salmon toped off with warm water (it was on sale). I had the usual customers eating well. Warm "fishy" water laid in with tuna, sardines or salmon on a cold day gets lapped up before any eating gets done. They love it.

Cats are tough animals. They tolerate cold weather well and if they can stay dry, be out of the wind and catch good food they can actually thrive during winter. The beds and comforters in the garage and the cat condos allow them to lay up, warm up and preserve energy no matter what's happening with the weather. Cats in a colony share beds to share warmth and I see that out back. I don't miss a day taking care of them and they should be in good shape all winter.

There better be horse racing, busty lady angels and beer there.
