Ted Weems had an orchestra that could rattle the ceiling with percussion and he had a big hit in 1933 with Heartaches. Back then a fellow named Elmo Tanner (from Tennessee) could whistle. Tanner did other things in show business but became well-known from this recording. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx4gi5_AV2U
