As a new home owner back in '78 I was thrilled to have a small color TV in the living room wired up to an antenna on the roof.

Keep moving.

Cable showed up. Computers showed up and I broke my ass to build a cabled 3-site network in my home off a router and modem. Everything had to be programmed to "share" the local network in the house before reaching out to the greater network. I could do it and did it.

Keep moving.

Satellite showed up and so did Wi-Fi that turned cabling into a strange trade.

Keep moving.

Today in 2016? Everybody has a glowing screen that gets stared at constantly while people walk into walls and in front of moving buses.

I still have a sharp cabled three-drop local network at home but the router is on Wi-Fi and talks to "things" in the house. Yesterday I installed a new 40-inch Sony "smart TV" for the wife in the living room. It's not a TV - it's a large tablet without a keyboard. She can putz around the internet with it, play her DVD movies on it or call in a cable-free program or movie via streaming from the router in the den in HD with surround sound.

And I used to be thrilled to see Howdy Doody in B&W on an 8-inch screen in a 200-pound television as a boy (with "snow" on the screen).
