This morning when most of the ferals were laid up after a good feed several starlings landed on their kibble dish to eat. Sounds like suicide, right? Not really. One starling was perched on the fence 6 feet above the feeding birds with his head in a constant swivel to look for an approaching predator. If a cat were to approach, the "guard bird" would let out a screech and fly directly towards the cat (out of reach) to distract it while his buddies took off to be safe. Emily was across the yard and just stared. She knew she had no shot to grab a bird so she didn't even try.
