The Mick was Mickey Mantle of the hated Yankees in my old addled brain but even Brooklyn fans admired his play. The ball he hit left-handed that hit a light tower on its way out of Yankee Stadium (never done) is still talked about but the ball he hit out of Griffith Stadium right-handed VS the Washington Senators in D.C. is thought to have destroyed a tractor when it landed in Maryland. On a serious note, Street & Smith's Baseball Almanac when I was a kid estimated that the Griffith Stadium home run by Mantle went 600 feet. |
