Ginger and her now missing sister Emily gave birth out back a year or two ago one day apart. Emily was "lost" as a kitten mother and kittens died in the dirt at the back of my house. I put the barely-alive two survivors in with Ginger and she took them in and nursed them along with her litter. They survived.

I think it was the third of April when Ginger gave birth to her new litter of four. No cat condo, no garage - she made a nest up against the tall fence in a corner behind the garage. It was going to be place that Ginger could defend.

Feral kittens that are several weeks of age are bonded tight and hard with their mother. They are not thrilled being around adult cats, humans or anything else. The kittens have been suckling and thriving with Ginger's milk for several weeks but....

I laid out lots of cat food this morning and the feral cats had a great meal - kibble, Friskies wet, 9Lives wet, Starkist tuna and Chicken-of-the-Sea sardines.

Afterwards? Ginger was flopped on the top step at the side door with a full belly. The adult feral cats were gone. By the closed side door I could see Ginger flopped on the top step. She was staring out back to the side of the garage. She was chirping and calling her kittens. With great trepidation all four kittens came out from behind the garage and walked down the driveway in answer to their mother's call. They got into the feed dishes for wet food, kibble and water while their mother Ginger stood over them on watch for predators or anything else that could harm her kittens. Ginger knows that Mom Nature will not permit her to nurse her kittens for ten years but she's a super mom and is teaching her kittens to grab solid food since she's not going to have milk for them for much longer.

Do you "know" which cats/kittens will be returning? Now with them altered, ear clipped and vaccinated the crew could live happily in the yard :?: :!:

The kittens will be up for adoption. The younger adults barely out of kittenhood like Catty Patty and Bosco will be tested for "socialization" and if they aren't totally feral yet will be placed for adoption. The rest are coming back.

Life wouldn't be worth living without Nasty Mom hissing and snarling at everything that moves.

I haven't seen Nasty Mom or the old tom Sad Face since the moment the first trap was laid down.
