As almost newlyweds the teen bride and I both caught some time off for the Memorial Day Day weekend of 1974. We were married in '73 but she had gotten old by turning 19 five days after the wedding and 20 in '74 but I still wanted to get away from our apartment in Flushing with her.
We had the rent covered and a new '74 Olds Omega. Our debt was manageable and we had a few bucks. We drove east to Montauk Point for the weekend, east of the Hamptons. We had fishing gear and via surf casting off a rocky Montauk beach landed three fish - a good fluke, a blackfish and a small striped bass (maybe 7 pounds). We gave the fish away to some locals that could use them.
Now it was time to grab some dinner and catch a motel room. The dinner we did have. The room? It was out east in the Hamptons and beyond - it was $100.00 for a room and our pay at work didn't get much more than that each for a week of good labor.
We went home to our 2 & 1/2 room apartment in Flushing in the '74 Olds. Our rent was $168 a month, $100 for one night was not in the budget back then.
