Pop would be 103 in June but he died in 1974. I grew up knowing that the old man had been wounded in WWII but it wasn't until I was in high school that a package arrived in the mail from the U.S. Army with his second Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal. He was authorized to wear an oak-leaf cluster upon his Purple Heart for a second award for being wounded in action with 168th Infantry/34th Infantry Division in Italy.
He got up at 5 a.m. next day to go to work so that my mother, sister and I could keep eating with a roof overhead.
The "Greatest Generation" has some truth attached to it.
