Shit happens and not everything is a thrill with great joy at Christmastime. My son John was laying cable up high as an experienced blue-collar union journeyman today on a double-shift for good bucks when he went off a 12-foot ladder. Something had to have gone terribly wrong as cable crews underground or up high in building ceilings live and breathe safety.

He's in an ER now with an injured leg but we won't know much more until later. His wife is a pharmacist for CVS and carries outstanding insurance but I'm more worried about my kid's leg. And he called me yesterday about the raise he caught for breaking his ass at work and putting in extra hours.

Life doesn't suck, just pieces of it now and again.

Jennifer and my wife are on the texting hotline.

At 6:25 p.m. we learned that John has a broken leg with extra damage. An orthopedic guy has been called in make an assessment. John is in a good place with great people taking care of him and it's not like he got hit by a bus but that guy is still my wife's 40-year-old "baby boy". Hey, there are people that have been hurt badly and killed in the news all week. John is a tough old U.S. Army infantry medic and I think he'll go well with this. Breaks my heart a little bit though.

Hold the phone. Speaking of phones, I just saw an ER photo of John's leg on the wife's phone. I ain't never seen a more purple shin than what's on John and the swollen knee looks like hell but there seems to be an argument among doctors about something broken.

John's hurt but I'm not thrilled with all this 21st-century drama.

Telegrams were beautiful and didn't have you worrying all night except for crawling the walls with the worst thoughts imaginable. My mother received two during WWII and they were both the same:

McVey, Mary B.
844 Faltbush Avenue
Brooklyn, New York

The commanding officer of the 34th Infantry Division United States Army regrets to inform you that McVey John P. #32319533 United Sates Army has been wounded in action (stop) Details to follow (stop)

By order of the Adjutant General

Hey, it's Christmas weekend. John got sent home hobbling with a wrecked leg and an appointment to see the orthopedic doc on Tuesday. Foggy X-rays with the swelling say "no break". He'll be OK I think but losing work is not good for him, or anybody else these days. I have no idea how he will make out but he's got a wife and two parents that love him dearly.

Shit happens.

Nothing broken is good.

Timing is everything. Christmas eve not best time to get injured. Fact that he goes to an orthopedic on Tuesday is good.
Whatever swelling is around will show-up. Fortunately, in 2018 orthopedics are top notch. John may be out of work for awhile...but hopefully nothing that time won't heal.

Tough break, especially around the holidays.
