It's been cold and shitty for days on Long Island. And wet. This morning when I went to ShopRite on the muffin run at 8 a.m. it was raining and 32 degrees. No cats were outside looking for food.
Around 10 a.m. it was still raining but some wet hungry cats were by the side door. I laid out platters of warm cat food and the huge stainless steel feed dish loaded up with cans of tuna and sardines all mashed up with heated water to make a warm "fish soup".
I did the same deal in the rain after the getaway race at Philly Park.
The outside cats can dry off in a hurry in the garage or cat condos with the cushions, hay, blankets and comforters provided. The trick is to keep them loaded up with good food. The temperature is not a big deal no matter how low it goes. Cats store up fat in their "belly bags" and if in a dry place out of the wind they can withstand winter temps. All they need is to consume a lot of calories to keep on going well with good health.
