It's unusual to catch the laugh of the day at 6 a.m. but I did it today. The cat has officially been named Mittens by the bride and since having the four kittens the other day she's eating several cans of cat food a day and drinking water like an old mule to keep the milk flowing.

The bride was pulling out of here at 6:30 this morning so I drove over to Pathmark at 6 to buy catfood. We didn't need any groceries so I bought a gallon of 2% milk, 3 bananas and 12 cans of cat food. The store is mostly empty at that hour.

You guessed it. A woman my age in the store on her way to work saw what I was buying and figured I was a destitute old fart living on cat food. She wanted to buy me a steak and pay for my order. Nah, I wasn't offended, I simply explained the deal with the stray cat and we both had a laugh. I thanked her for her kindness. I was touched but I saw the humor in it.

I have nightmares about the bride buying a litterbox, having Mittens spayed and turning into a Cat Woman with about a hundred of them in the house. The night before Mittens had the kittens I walked into the living room and my wife was sitting there reading a book with the cat curled up on her lap sound asleep. I have never seen or heard of a feral cat so gentle and trusting as Mittens.

At least the cat is getting some lovin.

I'm still sipping coffee and working today's card but I'm still laughing.

If there's a Dog Heaven I know I'm raising the hackles of Spot, Mac, Susie, Donna, and Sandy.

Jeez, Mac used to get loose and bring home dead cats as presents for my father.
