passed away yesterday. Yet another link to younger days when it was important to READ the newspaper. I came late to the game with him as I only remember him writing in the Daily News but he was one of the few writers that actually could put 2 words together and make sense whenever he wrote about the horse racing game. Tony Paige, the overnight host, spoke about him for awhile last night and mentioned how gracious he was when Tony first got into the boxing game. The News was mandatory reading for me in JHS & HS as I was a fan of Jimmy Breslin, Bob Herbert and others. RIP Mr Ziegel.

I've been reading Ziegel for his entire career. His death saddens me. I picked up the paper this morning and was absolutely stunned.
