Uprading from Vista is not bad although you may have to de-install some incompatible software.

The upgrade from XP is a whole lot more complex.

Win7 is well-worth the effort. Things are a whole lot better with it. I have upgraded 2 PCs at home and it only took a couple of hours for each one.
