I finally noticed the first red blush on some tomatoes. Last year I had tomatoes by the 4th of July but the June Monsoon that broke all records with rain and low temperatures has played havoc with my crops. My bell pepper plants are just starting to actually grow peppers but the plants are small. The zuchinni, on the other hand, went nuts in all the rain and I'm giving some away. Those suckers are growing an inch or two a day and just keep coming. The eggplant looks healthy but there ain't no eggplant yet.

Tomatoes need sparse watering and long days of dry heat to be at their best. That did not happen this year. The farmers on eastern Long Island have already applied to the Feds for disaster relief. The leafy green veggies out there never had a chance. Hundreds of acres of spinach drowned in June and I'm not kidding.

You can dip the eggplant flowers in egg, and fry them. Same with Zaccuni

The first time I had eggplant as a kid I thought it was veal. Mom would bread it, bake it, and serve it with pasta and a delightful home-made tomato sauce. Women can't cook or bake anymore but they put out a helluva lot more in an attempt to compensate.
