These two dogs were partners for a lot of years. We had Susan, the border collie/shepherd mix, for 19 years and 10 months. The big rotty thing lived to be 15. Susan would go into heat and chase male dogs while running backwards with her tail in the air while the big beast was fixed and got along with every dog and human she ever met, although she was scary to look at.

I really miss those dogs but am happy that both had long lives filled with love and good care. Neither was ever sick for a day until their final days and never had to go see a vet except to be put down.

One time the junkyard dog from next door got loose and attacked 1/8 Pole as he was riding his bike. The dog hit my son and he was only spared from bites when his bike shielded him as he was down on the sidewalk. At that same momement I was letting Susan out, saw what was going on, and yelled, "Get 'em, dog!"

Susan engaged that dog that was three times her size and tore it to pieces with a ferocity that I didn't think possible. She brawled for her "kid" just like I would have.

1/8 Pole and Susan came away from that deal unhurt.

True story.
