This photo was taken in late 1967 at Camp Pendleton, California when I was 19. Vietnam was going nuts and the Marine Corps was becoming large - it was going into four Divisions in the field for the first time since WWII although the 5th Marine Division (4th was reserve and never went active) only laid out two regiments. As a 1965 Marine with infantry experience at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina with 6th Marines and two years regular service and a trip to Gitmo in Cuba I was an "old hand". I got promoted in a hurry. The Marine Corps would catch draftees when the poop hit the propeller in 1968 but we were young then and when you're young you are invincible. Yeah, it's a clown picture taken by a buddy in a quonset hut and I'm wearing starched khakis before going to the NCO Club to swallow beer but I'm so proud to have been a teen buck sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.
