This post card is dated 1936:  This post card from the Spa represents an early starting gate from some time in the 1930's. It's doorless and pulled by horses but the modern gate was being born here. Looks like a 7-furlong race out of the Wilson mile chute:

It appears 2 starters are standing outside the #5 post position, blocking the #4 horse. I have this in a magnet version on my refridge.
