The media......Newsday felt compelled to bury this story after the celeb gossip news in todays paper.
It difficult to find on their website also. I wonder where it would be if the attackers were white and the victims black.
Waiting on Rev Al's response.
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/nassa ... 3202.storyTwo 18-year-old men from Valley Stream were arrested Monday and charged with gang assault in a vicious attack early Sunday that left a 30-year-old Long Island Rail Road worker critically injured.
The incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime, Nassau police said.
The railroad worker, who is from Valley Stream but who has not otherwise been identified by police, is white.
The assailants, believed to be a dozen or more males and females, were African-American, according to information supplied to police by the beaten man and other witnesses.
Domineek Washington, 18, of Princeton Street, was arrested on Broadway in Valley Stream by Fifth Precinct officers at 11 a.m. Monday. Jimmy Blaise, 18, of Garfield Avenue, was arrested by Bureau of Special Operations Officers on Garfield Avenue at 10:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
Both were charged with gang assault - that is, an assault by three or more persons - and are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
Police said the victim, who was repeatedly punched and kicked in the face, head and body during the incident at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, told them the attack was unprovoked.
Nassau police spokesman Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone said the man had gone outside to move his car off the street during a July Fourth party when he was attacked.
The victim sustained a concussion and fractured eye socket, Repalone said.
"There is no motive at this time," Repalone said Monday, but said investigators were looking to see whether the assault was motivated by race.
"A witness heard someone in the crowd make a comment that the police will follow up to determine whether this attack was racially motivated," Repalone said, adding: "It's too early at this time to make that determination."
Following the arrests Tuesday, police still could not say if the attack was motivated by race - or if race was a factor.
On Monday a woman, who did not want to be identified but said the victim was her brother, said he has multiple fractures in his face and jaw.
She said a fight in the group of teenagers started before her brother went to move his car.
"They were having a conflict," the woman said. "I assume maybe they thought he was getting involved."
A 911 call was picked up by New York City emergency services and redirected to Nassau County, Repalone said.
The call was disconnected and the Nassau operator called back, Repalone said, but was unable to reach anyone.
The man did not seek medical treatment, and his family did not call police again until more than 13 hours after the attack, Repalone said. Police said the man and his family may have underestimated the extent of his injuries.
He eventually was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where police said he remains in critical but stable condition on Tuesday morning.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
