When I saw the 23 & 46 splits on the "Fast" track with the two chalks on a day that began as Muddy I thought that the front end might have a problem off the second turn.
Chad's winner ducked in a bit at the top of the lane but had enough to get by the leaders. The Pletcher chalk gave it up and faded. Nobody else had a run and the tiring CLASSIC EMPIRE held the place.
And that's why old diddlers and railrats do not swoon and catch a quick heartbeat in Grade 1 "monster races" on national TV - it's only a horse race when you go to the windows. The bottom claimer that gets home at 4/1 on three legs is a better horse than the 2/1 Grade 1 winner that sets a track record to a handicapper that's holding tickets on both.
